AZ High School Students Receive Culinary Equipment
On January 30th, National Restaurant Supply (NRS) donated 100 culinary kits to Arizona high school students competing for scholarships from around the State in the Careers through Culinary Arts Program (C-CAP). Drew Gulbas, Director of Sales and Marketing, and Ken Gillies, Sales Representative, worked for months to provide culinary kits to these student competitors.
Each student that submitted an acceptable C-CAP Application received a kit at the NRS Vendor Fair. This event allowed students to experience the restaurant supply business by touring the NRS retail facility, attending knife sharpening demonstrations, watching C-CAP alumnus Jelani Port and others perform knife skills, participating in cooking demonstrations, and watching a Rational cooking demonstration. Rational USA supplied food for the students to sample. Some students' family and teachers attended too.
Metro Tech Chef Instructor, Dean Wilberscheid, was pleased with the generous donation. He said, “This year the students will all go in to the competition on a level playing field with the same equipment – the same size pans and tools.” Many families and schools can not afford to provide knives, pans or cutting boards to students.
The preliminary competitions begin on February 6th at Metro Tech and move to EVIT on February 13th. The final competition is on March 13, 2010, at the Arizona Culinary Institute. Jill Smith, AZ C-CAP Director said, “In 2009, we awarded over $477,000 in culinary scholarships to Arizona high school students.”
Each kit contained bowls, knives, a whisk, cutting board, measuring tools and more. Each kit is worth $172, for a total donation from NRS of $17,270 (not including the cost of the Vendor Fair).
